An army captain today described how a traffic warden was battered unconscious after trying to put a ticket on a car owned by mourners from a funeral for a soldier killed in Iraq.

Captain Robert Moseley witnessed the beating outside a pub in Battersea after attending the funeral of 21-year-old Lance Corporal James Cartwright, who died in June last year.

Capt Moseley, who was in the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment with L-Cpl Cartwright, told how he saw Syed Jawad Hyder, 38, being attacked by Lee Jones, a cousin of the deceased.

Mr Hyder was battered around the head and body with a motorcycle helmet and had a glass smashed in his face, Kingston Crown Court heard.

Hmmm... Not being there, then it's hard to make comment as to the circumstances as to why he felt the need to issue a penalty notice.
However.. I always made a point of avoiding weddings and funerals!

My other question.. Why didn't anybody try and stop this sensless violence? Yes, the parking attendant was only doing his job, but the job isn't worth dying for! Did the attendant know that the vehicles had been involved inthe recent funeral? My thought to this question would have been "No" as they were parked outside a pub. The more level headed officer should have approached the attendant and just mentioned the obvious and that he would do everthing in his power to solve the parking situation.

Nuff said before I shoot myself in the foot!

Have to agree with nighthawk on this one. Just because someone is at a funeral doesn't mean you are immune to getting a ticket, especially as complaints are sometimes received from nearby residents. Equally, if possible, bearing in mind how peoples emotions are often heightened at these events, the Attendant could have been more circumspect. Having said that, if cars were parked outside a pub, I don't think he could have forseen what happened to him. Just going off-topic for a moment, I think Nighthawk is stalking me. Why else would he turn up outside my house at 05:20 just as I was leaving for work. He's a dangerous and unpredictable man.
