University student Rico Dixon, 22, swore at the victim before the assault, which happened as he was caught parking his black Mercedes on a pavement.

A motorist has been given a suspended prison sentence and ordered to pay £200 compensation to a traffic warden after he spat in his face when he was handed a parking ticket.

University student Rico Dixon, 22, swore at the victim before the assault, which happened as he was caught parking his black Mercedes on a pavement.

Manchester magistrates were told he then got into the car and drove away – but not before threatening to 'shoot' the warden.

Jennifer Baines, prosecuting, said: “As he drove off, he turned and shouted, 'I'm going to shoot you'.”

The assault happened after Dixon parked his car at the corner of Chester Street and Lower Ormond Street, Off Oxford Road, on September 21 last year.

Magistrates were told he had asked the warden if he could park on the pavement and was told not to leave his car there.

Miss Baines said the warden saw what he had done and gave him five minutes to return. But, when he still had not returned, he decided to give him a ticket.

He was writing it out when Dixon returned and swore at him. He went to put the ticket on the windscreen and heard Dixon clearing his throat.

Dixon also jumped in front of the traffic warden as he tried to take a picture of his car. He was arrested after police traced the vehicle.

The traffic warden told police: “I saw spit coming towards me and felt it hit my face and shoulder.”

He added: “I felt threatened by the male. He was very aggressive towards me.”

Stan Sumara, defending, said: “There was a totally out of character flash of anger.”

He said Dixon had been waiting for a friend who had failed to turn up. He claimed he had been given some grace to park on the corner for a few minutes.

Dixon, of Kersal Road, Prestwich, pleaded guilty to assault at an earlier hearing.

He was sentenced to six weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months. He was ordered to pay the traffic warden £200 compensation.

He will have to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work over 12 months and have regular meetings with probation officers.

Dixon told the court he was 'disgusted with himself'. He admitted he would have felt 'intimidated' if someone had spat at him.

Chairman of the bench Marie Cash told him: “It's an absolutely disgusting thing to do to spit at somebody. This was a public servant going about his business.

“Behaving in this despicable manner will not be tolerated.”
